At James Cargill's death in 1895 his father's name was given as John Cargill and his mother's maiden name as Spink, first name unknown. His age at death is given as 87 but in the 1891 census his age is 80.

It's possible that he could be the son of David Cargill and Agnes Spink, born in 1810. This James Cargill is living with his widowed mother in the 1841 census, there doesn't seem to be another candidate in Auchmithie at that time.
